There may be spare branches galore but white-breasted woodswallow natural behaviour is to jam up against each other on the one branch.

I'm thinking that it's a security measure as they are a relatively small bird and often sit out on exposed branches. Sitting close together they have the appearance of something larger which may be off putting to potential predators.
